Collier Tourism Director Meets with Lawmakers

By: Editorial Staff

Bed Tax Collections Must Not Change, Wert Says

Collier tourism chief Jack Wert this week urged state lawmakers to avoid changing current tourism tax legislation as they search for dollars to meet state revenue shortfalls.

Wert, who serves as chairman of the Florida Association of CVBs and executive director of Greater Naples, Marco Island & The Everglades CVB, was one of several state tourism leaders selected to provide input Wednesday to the Florida House Tourism Committee in Tallahassee.

"With tourism the leading generator of sales tax revenue in the state, this is not the time to alter state statute governing bed tax collections," said Wert. "With pressures from the economy and international politics, tourism promotion dollars are essential to encourage people to travel. We also encouraged lawmakers to maintain current levels of funding for the state tourism-marketing agency Visit Florida."

Appearing with Wert before the committee were Tom Waits of the Florida Hotel/Motel Association and Bill Peeper of the Orlando/Orange County Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
