Gov. Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 5, consolidating the state’s economic development agencies under the newly created Department of Commerce. The responsibilities and resources of Enterprise Florida Inc., which is geared toward economic development, such as business retention and relocation efforts, will transfer to the Department of Economic Opportunity, which will be renamed the Department of Commerce. The bill also creates a new direct-support organization responsible for international economic development within the department. It reconstitutes Visit Florida, the state’s tourism marketing arm, and the Florida Sports Foundation as the direct-support organization of the department. DeSantis appointed J. Alex Kelly, who currently serves as deputy chief of staff for the governor, to lead the Department of Commerce. The department will continue to support Florida’s economic development and growth through performance-driven job creation and capital investment grant programs, infrastructure grants, rural county and small city grants, broadband grants, small business and rural loan programs and other small business programs.
