The U.S. 41 bridges over the Peace River are closed until further notice due to road flooding in Punta Gorda, officials announced. Storm surge, high tides and excessive rainfall from Hurricane Idalia caused widespread localized flooding. 

At about 8 a.m. the Duncan Road (U.S. 17) exit into Punta Gorda was shut down, and motorists were directed to exit or enter Interstate 75 either at Harborview Road in Port Charlotte or Jones Loop Road in Punta Gorda. 

The downtown section of the city of Punta Gorda was particularly hit hard with street flooding which extends from Cooper Street west to Berry Street and Fishermen’s Village, which is closed today. 

Some motorists driving along sections of Riverside Drive in Punta Gorda and Harborview Road and Bayshore Drive in Charlotte Harbor, which are susceptible to flooding, hydroplaned, law enforcement said. 

The severe weather and heavy rains are expected to worsen throughout the morning. 

The Beach Road causeway in Englewood, which leads to Manasota Key, is closed until further notice.  

Charlotte County spokesperson Brian Gleason announced the road on Blind Pass Beach on Manasota Key in Sarasota County has been washed out, so that bridge is also closed. There is no way on or off Manasota Key. 

Residents and visitors who don’t need to travel are advised to remain at home and not drive on roadways. 

Charlotte County officials urge motorists to remain alert at all times and to exercise caution when traveling. Travelers are encouraged not to drive through roadways that are underwater and find an alternate route. 

Shortly before 10 a.m. 2,900 Florida Power & Light customers were without power in Charlotte County, but the utility company said power would be restored today.
