Sanibel Captiva Trust Co. finished navigating its aftermath of Hurricane Ian, moving into two new office buildings to better serve its clients.

The trust company, founded by Al Hanser 23 years ago, celebrated the opening of its new flagship office at 2450 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel Island. The company hired architect Joyce Owens to redesign what had been a vacant Bank of America building. The project essentially rebuilt the entire building, office president Jeff Muddell said, and it cost $3 million.

“We have clients now across the country and around the world,” Muddell said. “So, we do rely heavily on remote technology. But we’re also very hands-on.

When our clients need to discuss a major change in their life, when they need money, when they need our services, it’s a very hands-on operation.”

The trust company is not a bank, but it’s not just a wealth management company either, Muddell said.

“Our specialty are families who need the help of a private wealth manager,” Muddell said. “And then even more than that. We’re more than just an investment agency. We’re more than just a broker. We do that for clients. We do money management.

What we do could involve businesses. It could involve real estate. We encourage everybody to check out our services and know we are more than just a brokerage and more than just an investment manager. We do a lot more.”

Sanibel Captiva Trust Co.'s new office in south Fort MyersThe trust company also spent about $1 million renovating the new south Fort Myers office at 13525 Bell Tower Drive. That building had been vacant for eight years.

Megan Marquardt will lead efforts at that office, where she credits Owens with creating a welcoming space for new clients.

“It turned out amazing,” Marquardt said, absolutely amazing.”

Sanibel Captiva Trust Co. manages more than $4 billion in assets across Southwest Florida and beyond.

“Some need help with financial planning,” Marquardt said. “Some need help with investment management or their estate planning. Some need help planning for retirement or tax planning. But we’re so much more than investment management. We really take good care of our clients, and we really care.”
