Charlotte County Clerk of the Circuit Court Roger Eaton and the county’s Community Development Department announced the launch of a streamlined building permit application process that allows notices of commencement to be electronically recorded directly into the clerk’s official records.

The new system eliminates the need for citizens and their contractors to navigate between multiple government agencies to file permit applications with the county office and notices of commencement with the clerk’s office.

The direct electronic link between the county and clerk’s office is a seamless process that will save applicants time and money, county officials said.

The process includes building department permits only. Future integrations will include zoning permits.

Building permits and notices of commencement for Punta Gorda have to go through the city.

“The collaboration between the Charlotte County Clerk of the Circuit Court and the Community Development Department reflects our commitment to innovative public service and efficiency,” Eaton said.

“This new system not only streamlines the process for our citizens, but also represents a significant step toward digital integration and environmental sustainability by reducing paper use.”

Charlotte County Commission Chair Bill Truex, said, “As a builder, I appreciate this effort to streamline the process for filing permit applications and notices of commencement. As a government official, I applaud the interagency cooperation between the county and the clerk’s office to identify process improvements and work together to better serve our constituents.”

Since he took office, Eaton has been pushing to enhance digital services to improve customer service and efficiency, according to a spokesperson from his office.
