The effort to legalize recreational marijuana use in Florida failed as Amendment 3 fell short of the 60% requirement to pass a state constitutional amendment. The amendment received 55.7% approval. Amendment 3 proposed the legalization of recreational marijuana for adults 21 and older. Currently, the possession and use of marijuana for nonmedical purposes is illegal under both state and federal law. Had the amendment passed, Florida would have joined Washington, D.C., as well as 24 other states that have legalized recreational marijuana.
