The leisure and hospitality industries continue to be among the worst hit by the coronavirus pandemic. And more details are emerging at just how hard those industries were hit.
Naples is particularly reliant on jobs from its restaurants, hotels and other tourism-related services. Pre-pandemic, employment in tourism and hospitality accounted for about 20% of jobs in the Naples area, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In Fort Myers, it’s about 15%. In April of this year, those jobs declined by about 37% compared to the previous year. In Fort Myers, the drop was even greater: 50% below April 2019. Leisure and hospitality jobs are rebounding, but not as quickly as other job sectors.
