The Charlotte County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved two housing development proposals Dec. 12, including a development consisting of 496 single-family homes.

The 173-acre Coral Lakes Phase 1 development is planned at 13000 Burnt Store Road and a portion of 13250 Burnt Store Road in Punta Gorda, with a more than 306-acre parcel boundary.

Fort Myers-based Banks Engineering firm requested approval for Coral Lakes, which also will have an amenities area and related infrastructure.

Coral Lakes will be part of the greater Burnt Store Corridor that has multiple communities along Burnt Store Road, including Burnt Store Colony, Burnt Store Lakes, Burnt Store Marina, Pirate Harbor, Burnt Store Village, Eagle Point, Park Hill and River Haven.

Commissioners also approved a preliminary plat plan for a development called West Port East being built by The Kolter Group LLC out of Delray Beach.

Brett Rocklein from Morris Engineering and Consulting appeared on behalf of Kolter, which proposed a development consisting of 436 lots and 23 tracts on more than 187 acres. The project is at 17372 Toledo Blade Blvd. within the boundary of the Murdock Village Community Redevelopment Area in Port Charlotte.

After the meeting, Rocklein said this is only the first step toward final approval. Next, the developer will submit its final site application, which will take place next year, before seeking final plat approval from the commissioners.
