Estero-based rental car company Hertz Corp. named former Goldman Sachs executive Stephen Scherr as its new CEO, the company announced Friday. Scherr succeeds former Ford Motor Co. CEO Mark Fields, who had been acting as Hertz’s interim CEO for the last four months.
Fields will continue to be a member of Hertz’s board of directors. Scherr will be the fourth person to hold the CEO title at Hertz in the last three years and the eighth in the past seven years. A subsidiary of Hertz Global Holdings Inc., Hertz Corp. operates the Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty vehicle rental brands.
Scherr, 57, spent nearly three decades with Goldman Sachs leading a range of strategic and operational functions before departing the company at the end of last year. He was the principal architect and leader of the bank’s new consumer business, helping to build Marcus by Goldman Sachs and leading the launch of the Apple credit card.
“Stephen is the leader Hertz needs to grow our business and to have a formidable position in the future of mobility and fleet management,” said Greg O’Hara, chairperson of Hertz’s board and founder and senior managing director at Certares. “He is a proven strategist, innovator and leader with a track record of earning customer loyalty.”
Scherr, who assumes his new job on Feb. 28, takes over a company that exited out of bankruptcy in the summer and went public in November. He’ll lead Hertz’s global workforce of almost 25,000 as it seeks to execute its plans of shared mobility, electrification of its fleet and a digital-first customer experience by combining its expertise in fleet management with new technology.
