Cape Coral City Council unanimously approved setting a public hearing for an ordinance relating to a moratorium on the acceptance of applications for and the issuance of permits for the development of self-storage facilities within all zoning districts in the city. The city has an estimated 1.5 million square feet of existing self-storage space, with an additional 1.6 million square feet of self-storage in the permitting process or under construction. The city is currently over the industry standard for the supply of self-storage facilities per capita, according to the ordinance. The city is proposing a 12-month moratorium on self-storage facilities for staff to conduct a study for possible revision of the land development code and determine what actions are necessary to address the issue. The first public hearing will be April 3.
