The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge celebrated the second-phase reopening of its facilities, including the Visitor & Education Center, Wildlife Drive and some of its trails, with a ribbon-cutting and help from The Sanibel & Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce April 4. The visitor center reopening means DDWS will be once again back in business at its Refuge Nature Store. The center will open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday through Thursday. Wildlife Drive is accessible from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday through Thursday. Until further notice, some of Indigo Trail and all of Mangrove Overlook and Calusa Shell Mound Trail remain closed. Wildlife Drive tram tours currently are not running. No opening dates have yet been set for those facilities. The refuge reopened Tarpon Bay Explorers Feb. 1, with limited hours and services. With the reopening of Wildlife Drive, Bailey Tract trails are also open to the public.
