A centennial celebration for Collier County, showcasing its history, achievements and challenges it faced during its first 100 years, was held Monday at City Hall in Everglades City. Barron Collier III was in attendance and gave a speech about his grandfather, Barron Gift Collier Senior. The Memphis, Tennessee, native from 1921 to 1923 purchased 1.3 million acres in Lee County and paved the way for establishing Collier County, WINK News reports.
