Aysegul Timur is set to become Florida Gulf Coast University’s fifth president following a 7-6 vote by the school’s board of trustees Thursday. The current vice president and vice provost for strategy and program innovation at FGCU was chosen to succeed current President Mike Martin, who will retire June 30, after a final interview with the board. Other finalists interviewed were Henry Mack III, senior chancellor at the Florida Department of Education; Neil J. MacKinnon, provost at Augusta University in Augusta, Georgia; and Joseph Morgan, president of Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky. Originally from Turkey, Timur, who will be FGCU’s first female president, moved to Naples 25 years ago and earned a doctorate from the University of South Florida. She owns master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Istanbul. At FGCU, she launched the micro-credentialing and digital badges initiative, and recently led the university to receive a $22.9 million grant from the Department of Commerce — Economic Development Administration’s Good Jobs Talent Grant for workforce development in Southwest Florida. Contract negotiations are expected to begin immediately, and Timur will go before FGCU’s Board of Governors in June for confirmation.
