The Federal Emergency Management Agency placed the town of Fort Myers Beach on probation from the National Flood Insurance Program Nov. 18 and will retrograde its Community Rating System classifications, town officials announced. Discounts on NFIP premiums that allow residents to save up to 25% will be removed. Town officials said Fort Myers Beach submitted documentation requested by FEMA and a corrective action plan by the Nov. 18 deadline following notification in March that participation in NFIP and the community’s rating would be retrograded. “I am disappointed that FEMA has made the decision to put the town on probation,” Town Manager Andrew Hyatt said. “Town staff is committed to following our FEMA-approved plan and will continue to collaborate with FEMA and [Florida Division of Emergency Management] to regain our NFIP discount and CRS classification.”
