Nearly 200 animals from shelters in Hurricane Milton-impacted areas were transported from Sarasota on Oct. 12 by plane to receiving shelters across the Midwest. Humane Society Naples sent 14 animals to Adopt Pet Shelter in Wisconsin and Collier County Domestic Animal Services and Gulf Coast Humane Society also sent animals. These transfers allow Southwest Florida shelters to make room to receive animals from storm impacted partner organizations, Humane Society officials said. Humane Society Naples locations sustained no structural damage or flooding from Milton, CEO Sarah Baeckler said. The organization evacuated all animals from their main shelter on Airport-Pulling Road in Naples prior to the hurricane. The animals were relocated to foster homes and to HSN’s Oaks campus, located east of Interstate 75, where staff remained throughout the storm to provide onsite care.
