Hurricane Idalia made landfall as a Category 3 storm at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday near Keaton Beach in Taylor County, 74 miles southeast of Tallahassee. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 125 mph before heading to Georgia with top winds of 90 mph and then weakening to a tropical storm in the late afternoon. As of 11 p.m. Wednesday, poweroutage.us reports more than 151,000 homes in the state were without power, including 99% of Taylor County, 94% of Madison County and all of Jefferson County. Investment bank UBS made preliminary estimates of $9.36 billion in insured property losses from the storm in Florida. Gov. Ron DeSantis said all state bridges in areas impacted by the storm have been cleared by the Florida Department of Transportation, including Cedar Key Bridge in Levy County. FDOT has nearly 700 team members deployed to the impacted areas, which includes nearly 100 bridge inspectors and 224 cut-and-toss crew members, who’ve cleared 6,600 miles of roadway. Nearly 250 pieces of major equipment, including 140 dump trucks, 59 pumps and 207 other heavy equipment have been deployed with FDOT crews. Nearly 1,100 generators have been deployed to help restore traffic signals.
