A new tool was used in the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday to monitor the water and support red tide research, human health and the ecosystem. Approximately 10 miles offshore and 30 feet underwater, giant cement blocks will help scientists better understand what’s happening in the water. Kimberly’s Reef is Florida Gulf Coast University’s artificial research reef where instrumentation can be placed to study animals, algae and plant life, WINK News reports.
