Work is underway to restore the Iwo Jima Memorial at the Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve in Cape Coral. Built in 1998 near the Midpoint Bridge, the 20-foot statue depicts six marines raising the American flag. Veteran Charles Reed, chairman of the Marine Corps League’s restoration committee, partnered with city of Cape Coral to have it restored. It’s the first restoration effort the site has experienced in more than 10 years. Crews started work Tuesday and expect to complete the job in about six weeks, WINK News reports.
