Sanibel artist Rachel Pierce reopened her remastered gallery building, 1571 Periwinkle Way, after it was destroyed by Hurricane Ian nearly 13 months ago. The Southwest Florida news anchor turned professional artist originally opened the gallery in January 2022 after purchasing the building for $925,000 in July 2021. While gutting and rehabbing the building after the hurricane with her husband, Matthew, Pierce kept her business alive in her gallery parking lot by creating a community marketplace, an idea that evolved from selling her own paintings, jewelry and hand-painted clothing from the gallery’s front porch. She went to work replacing the art lost to the storm to sell. She debuted the community marketplace Jan. 2, the day the Sanibel Causeway reopened to general traffic, alongside other businesses and nonprofits that couldn’t immediately reopen after Ian. At its height, the market, which was open through Sept. 18, included 17 businesses and nonprofits.
