A Fortune 500 company purchased 835 acres in Charlotte County for $13.3 million to use for its online car auction business.

The Charlotte County Property Appraiser’s office confirmed Dallas-headquartered Copart of Connecticut Inc. purchased the land at 39450 Bermont Road, less than 3 miles west of State Road 31. At the time of the sale, the land was zoned for agriculture. Property records show its certified just value was $4,510,483 and its taxable value was $2,409,620.

LSI Companies Inc.’s Christi Pritchett brokered the deal that closed Dec. 18.

The acreage was part of the Hall Family Ranch at 40380 Bermont Road.

The previous landowner, William Lewshane Hall, died in a car crash in 2017 at 53. He was the only son of ranchers Lewis and Judy Hall, who predeceased him.

The family was known as ranch royalty in the area, along with the Babcock and Carlton families.

After William Hall’s death, Hall Family Ranch LLC was established April 29, 2020, with Miles Walker Hall of Rotonda West and William D. Hall of Sarasota as principals.

A corporate spokesperson from Copart of Connecticut was not available for comment, but Yasmeen Mari, who represents the Punta Gorda South Copart location in Arcadia, said the company is an auction house that sells total loss vehicles or as is vehicles.

On the company website, the business is described as the resale and remarketing of vehicles. The company, which trades as CPRT on the Nasdaq, sells vehicles on behalf of insurance companies, banks, finance firms, fleet owners, car dealerships and exporters, among others.

Copart operates in all 50 U.S. states and in Canada, the U.K., Irish Republic, Brazil, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Spain and Finland.

In Florida, there were 12 locations prior to the Bermont Road land acquisition.
