Although it’s been two years and three months since Hurricane Ian slammed Southwest Florida, city of Punta Gorda officials continue to calculate damages that totaled $6,344,317 as of late December.

“We do expect that number to rise,” Interim City Manager Melissa Reichert said.

The impact of Ian and an update will be discussed by City Council members at a Jan. 9 meeting.

At the time of the hurricane, the city had a $114,079,358 insurance policy with Lake Mary-based Preferred Governmental Insurance Trust.

Multiple city-owned properties were either destroyed or damaged by Category 4 winds.

Among the city-owned properties affected was the City Hall building, 326 W. Marion Ave. The building’s calculated loss after the deductible and depreciation now stands at $386,858.

All properties’ claims reflect losses after their 3% deductible and depreciation amounts.

The City Hall Annex’s claim is listed at $449,892.

Bayfront Center, 750 W. Retta Esplanade, which was used by the YMCA and rented out for various events, was destroyed and slated for demolition. Being claimed is a loss of $1,302,921.

The Punta Gorda Public Safety complex was damaged by Hurricane Ian.The Public Safety Complex, housing both the Punta Gorda Police Department and Fire Station No. 1 at 1410 S. Tamiami Trail, also was damaged. The losses amount claimed totals $64,929.

At a prior Council meeting in early December, members discussed the possibility of moving City Hall and the Punta Gorda Police Department more inland into a larger facility. The Public Safety Complex would be used by Fire Station No. 1.

The previous Council approved a design for a multilevel new City Hall complex on the present site at a cost of nearly $16 million. During the last meeting, new council members voiced opposition to the proposal, arguing the cost was too high.

The Dock Master building at Laishley Marina, 100 E. Retta Esplanade, had claimed damages of $55,303.

At the Jan. 9 meeting Council will discuss putting the management contract out for bid for Laishley Marina. The contract with Marina Park Management Group expires March 30.

Historic properties also were damaged by Hurricane Ian’s winds.

New Operation Cooper Street building was damaged by Hurricane Ian.Cooper Street Recreation Center, 650 Mary St., a multigenerational center serving residents living on the eastern side of the city for five decades, had $30,484 in losses. Among the losses and damage is the colorful mural that wraps around the building and tells of the history of the center. There are plans to have the mural restored.

The now shuttered Freeman House, 311 W. Retta Esplanade, claimed damages of $172,400.

The Utilities Administration building, 3132 Cooper St., has over $3.1 million in damages, but after the 3% deductible and depreciation, $1.216,071 is being claimed.

Gilchrist Park and its gazebo had wind damage from Hurricane Ian before flooding from hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024, the latter of which pushed boats anchored in Charlotte Harbor onto the park’s amenities, including tennis courts, onto the street and in front of peoples’ homes and the rear of the Military Heritage Museum along West Retta Esplanade.

Losses from the flooding events are still being calculated, but from Hurricane Ian alone, the claim for the park is $107,169, and the gazebo’s wind damage claim is $22,368.

Other losses to city property include a building at 38100 Washington Loop Road ($285,892), a filter building at the same address ($186,914), lift stations and more properties throughout the city.

Prior payments to the city for Hurricane Ian’s damage total $4,705,778, Reichert said.
