The Collier County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to award a more than $9 million construction contract for Phase 2A of Big Corkscrew Island Park to Naples-headquartered Quality Enterprises USA.
Big Corkscrew Island Regional Park comprises 150 acres east of Immokalee Road and north of Oil Well Road in Golden Gate Estates and has been a component of Collier County’s growth management plan since 1997.
The land is considered one of the county’s core campuses, as it includes an emergency medical services station, a Collier County Sheriff’s Office substation, a recycling center and fairgrounds. The park itself contains various sporting fields, a playground and an aquatic facility, which opened in October, marking the end of the project’s first phase.
The beginning portion of Phase 2A focuses on the construction of Big Corkscrew Drive access road, which will begin at Oil Well Road just east of Palmetto Ridge High School and move north through Orange Blossom Ranch and end at the park’s property. Another part of the phase involves installation of the surrounding roadway, sidewalks, landscaping and drainage around the future commercial center on Oil Well Road.
Construction is expected to begin in December and be completed by September 2024.
Phase 2B will focus on expanding the main entrance road into a larger park that will connect to Phase 1. The park will include picnic pavilions, walking trails and a dog park. County staff will bring forward the design to the county commission the beginning of 2024 with the goal of construction starting in late 2024.
